How do our children cope?
There are four basic strategies that your child could use to deal with this discomfort:
- Fight through it… work extra hard and pay the price of being uncomfortable
- Run away from it… avoid the things that make you uncomfortable (reading or writing)
- Make physical adaptations… develop a crossed eye (strabismus) or lazy eye (amblyopia), or shut off the vision in one eye.
- Develop an attention problem and learn to ignore the parts of your vision that is inconsistent.
Taking this 4th option can result in your child becoming more comfortable (less symptomatic), but can have a massive impact on academic performance. This may result in behaviors that mimic dyslexia, ADD, ASD, high functioning autism, or non-verbal learning disability.
